North Chicago Honors Black History Month

Happy Black History Month! The City of North Chicago celebrates the history, culture, and vision of the Black community that continues to inspire and transform us.

For 100 years, the nation has recognized the achievements and contributions of Black Americans, and their place in American history during the month of February. The theme for Black History Month 2026 is "A Century of Black History Commemorations," chosen by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Black History Month, which was founded by Dr. Carter G. Woodson in 1926.

The theme focuses on the ongoing significance of Black history and culture, honoring past achievements while looking at the evolving legacy of Black contributions to society over the last century.  This theme serves as a reminder of the vital role Black history plays in telling a complete and accurate American story, linking the past, present, and future.
