North Chicago Police Officers Receive Award

Composure Under Fire Draws Mayoral Recognition

North Chicago, Ill.July 13, 2022- North Chicago Police Officers responding to a domestic call came under gunfire from a suspect at the scene.  Police officers are often required to quickly pivot to skills that will save lives of their fellow officers, the public and allow them to return home to their families.

The decision to use deadly force is a calculation that officers must make within seconds for the sake of preservation of life, including the life of individuals committing the assault against them.  The seven North Chicago Police Officers collectively concluded that return fire was not needed and ultimately took the suspect into custody following a foot chase.

North Chicago Police Chief Lazaro Perez stated, “The officers responding to this situation demonstrated the utmost courage and restraint. They are an example for all law enforcement to follow.”

For their composure under fire, quick thinking and bravery Detective Mueller, Sgt. Martin and Officers Groves, Cress, Mando, Keske and Cullom were recognized by North Chicago Mayor Leon Rockingham during the North Chicago City Council meeting on July 5, 2022.
